Mendez Elementary's Jaryd Smith participated in the National Hispanic Institute's Texas Lorenzo de Zavala Youth Legislative Session this summer, and spent three days in July serving as a page. The program, that began in 1983,has the goal of students seeing themselves as future leaders in the Latino community. Jaryd, 8, is a 3rd grader this year. He is the son of Denise and Andrew Smith.
