Project Graduation
2008What IS Project Graduation anyway?
Project Graduation is an all-night event held after San Marcos High School graduation ceremonies to bring the grads and a few of their favorite friends together to safely celebrate. The concept arose to prevent accidents and tragedies related to graduation partying. Excitement on graduation night increases the enthusiasm for celebration and the Project Graduation Party provides a setting that is dedicated to congratulating the graduates. Traditionally, our event is an alcohol-free casino night with music, karaoke, food, games. Students gamble for play money and bid on or buy prizes (microwaves, toasters, computers, hair dryers, etc.) with their play-money winnings. Door prizes and other games with prizes awarded go on throughout the night.
Decisions regarding format and activities are in the formative stages. Please come to meetings and participate in planning and hosting the all-night gala to bring new ideas and old-fashioned help.
Parents, community, and friends of SMHS fund and host Project Graduation...and it does take the whole village.
A HISTORY of Project GraduationIn 1979, the Oxford Hills area in Maine experienced seven alcohol and other drug-related teen deaths during the commencement season. As a result of this tragic experience, the schools and communities in the Oxford Hills area offered their students an alternative to the "traditional" graduation night drinking and driving temptations that all too often end in tragedy. They called the party, "Project Graduation." By 1986, Project Graduation activities were held in fifty states. (http://www.wmtps.org/hs/projgrad/history.htm)
