SMCISD Dual Language Program Update

Dear Rodriguez-Zoned Elementary Dual Language Families,

We are writing to share an important update regarding your child’s enrollment in the SMCISD Dual Language Program.

As you know, your child is zoned to attend Rodriguez Elementary but has been attending Mendez Elementary as part of the district’s Dual Language Program. Beginning September 2, SMCISD will relocate Dual Language students who are zoned to Rodriguez Elementary from Mendez Elementary to Hernandez Elementary.

We understand that a change in your child’s school may raise questions and concerns, particularly at the beginning of a new school year. We want to assure you that this decision was made after carefully considering several important factors related to our students and the long-term success of the Dual Language Program.

One consideration is ensuring that students have the opportunity to attend school alongside the group of students with whom they will ultimately attend middle school. Moving Rodriguez-zoned students to Hernandez Elementary will help create greater continuity for students as they progress through the district.

The decision also takes into account capacity at Mendez Elementary and the need to effectively manage enrollment and class sizes across our elementary campuses. Relocating these students to Hernandez will help the district better balance enrollment while supporting appropriate class sizes and learning environments for all students.

We recognize that transitions can be challenging for students and families, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this adjustment. Our goal is to ensure that your child continues to receive a high-quality Dual Language education while also creating a sustainable and supportive learning environment for students across SMCISD.

Hernandez Elementary Principal Jennifer Gonzalez will be emailing you soon to welcome your family to Hernandez Elementary and provide additional information about the transition.

SMCISD transportation will be available to all students who need bus services during the transition to Hernandez Elementary.
