Ms. Kari Vanalstine

It's a great time to be a Rattler!

This is my third year as a San Marcos High School teacher, although this is my tenth year teaching. I have been teaching English for eight years and taught reading for two. My experience includes teaching reading to seventh graders in Omaha, Nebraska from 2000-2002, English to ninth, tenth, and twelfth graders from 2013-2015, and English Language Arts to seventh and eighth graders from 2016-2018. I enjoyed each of my experiences.

I grew up in Seguin, Texas, just down the road, and graduated from Seguin High School in 1991. I spent my time as an undergraduate at Texas Tech University studying architecture and civil engineering for two years before joining the English department in pursuit of my teaching certificate. Upon graduation, I attended graduate school at Texas A&M University and studied Educational Administration in Higher Education. I worked in university housing at five universities over a ten-year period in between teaching. Needless to say, I have a lot of experience in educating all levels of students. I am currently working toward my Master's in School Counseling from Lamar University. I should finish in 2023.

Prior to moving back to Texas, I lived in the Albany, NY area. I worked for the State of New York during this time. I moved back to Texas in 2013 with my two cats, Chloe and Zoe. We currently live in Seguin. In my spare time, I like to watch movies and T.V. shows on Netflix, catch up on some novels and personal development reading, work on my writing projects, and hang out with my cats.

I am really looking forward to getting to know all of my new students and learning more about San Marcos as the year continues. If you have any questions about me, feel free to ask.

Have a great year!
