Rattlers Win Area, Advance to Regional Semifinal for First Time in Nearly 20 Years

Rain wasn't the only thing that poured down on Satruday, as San Marcos poured on 33 straight points to roll past Edinburg 33–3 in the Area round, punching their ticket to the regional semifinals.

Edinburg opened the night with a methodical, clock-eating drive that lasted nearly eight minutes, but the Rattlers’ “Purple Thunder” defense refused to break. The Bobcats settled for a 24-yard field goal—their only points of the game—to take the early 3–0 lead.

San Marcos nearly answered immediately. Senior quarterback Buck Steyn found junior receiver Jordan Lampkin streaking down the field, and Lampkin pulled in a spectacular one-handed grab for a 65-yard gain that put the Rattlers inside the five. But Edinburg’s defense stood strong on fourth-and-goal, keeping San Marcos out of the end zone.

The Rattlers entered the second quarter trailing 3–0, but momentum quickly flipped. San Marcos forced a fumble deep in Bobcat territory and recovered the ball at the Edinburg 27. A few plays later, Steyn connected with Lampkin again—this time for a 16-yard touchdown that put San Marcos in front for good, 7–3.

The big plays didn’t stop there. On the ensuing possession, Edinburg was forced to punt, and senior Trey Walker broke through to block it. The ball was recovered by the Bobcats in their own end zone, resulting in a safety and pushing the San Marcos lead to 9–3.

After receiving the free kick, the Rattlers struck once more. Steyn delivered a 19-yard scoring pass to senior Elliot Gray, stretching the margin to 16–3. Senior kicker Julio Alvarado added a 40-yard field goal as the first half expired, sending San Marcos into the break ahead 19–3.

Severe thunderstorms forced a two-hour delay before play resumed. But the wait didn’t cool off the Rattlers’ offense. On their first drive of the third quarter, Steyn launched a 46-yard touchdown pass to Lampkin, effectively sealing the game. Senior running back Justin Tardy later powered in from seven yards out to close out the scoring and lock in the 33–3 victory.

With the win, San Marcos advances to the regional semifinals for the first time since 2006 and only the third time in school history since the 1982 playoff expansion.

The Rattlers now prepare for defending 6A Division II state champion Austin Vandegrift, which comes into the matchup at 10–2 after a 37–7 win over San Antonio Brandeis.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
