Welcome to the Bowie Library!

  • The Bowie Elementary Library has something for everyone!  Classes go to the library on a weekly basis for library-related instruction and to check out new books.  Some of our activities throughout the year include:

    • book fairs
    • reading nights
    • reading incentive programs
    • author visits
    • free book giveaways

  • Storyville is Bowie Elementary's annual literacy celebration.  Now in its 12th year, Storyville features week-long activities for students, staff and the community.  Award-winning authors give presentations and writing workshops with students.  Students and staff dress up as their favorite book character.  Community members serve as guest readers in our classrooms, reading a favorite book and sharing why reading is such an important skill.  Classes participate in book-themed door decorating contests.

Bowie's 12th Annual Storyville was held the week of March 5-9, 2018.  Thank you to everyone who made our event a success!

Battle of the Books

  • The Battle of the Books is a reading competition open to 4th and 5th grade students.  Teams of up to 4 students have the option to sign up to enter the competition in February of each school year.  Each team is responsible for reading the 20 titles that have been selected as Battle Books.  Teams may divide up the reading responsibilities amongst themselves as they see fit, though we do encourage students read as many titles from the list as possible.

Each of the teams will compete against each other in a local Battle of the Books in April.  The Bowie team that wins the local Battle of the Books will earn the opportunity to move on to the district competition where they will compete with the winning teams from the other elementary schools in SMCISD.

The district Battle of the Books is a competitive event that celebrates reading!  The winning team at the district Battle of the Books will earn a trophy for the school to hold for the year, a plaque with engraved names to display in the school library and individual medals for each of the members of the winning team.
