Head Football Coach

John Walsh will be starting his 32nd year in education and coaching,20 of those years as the head football coach. Coach Walsh has lead his teams to the playoffs 14 of those 19 years. Of those 14 years his teams reached the semifinals 6 times, coached in 4 State Championship games and won of 2 them. Coach Walsh is married to Amber (Goodnight Middle School girls coordinator, and has 3 children - JW Walsh 33 (who played QB for him and lead them to thier first state title game) coaches football at his alma mater Oklahome State. Sami Walsh 26 (graduate from the University of Arkansas) lives in the Dallas business world. Maggie Walsh 22 (San Marcos HS graduate) plays volleyball at Texas State University. Kristian Cogdill was born and raised in San Marcos, TX and is a 2010 graduate of San Marcos HS. After high school he played football at The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN. After graduating from St. Scholastica he went to Texas State University for his Masters degree in Secondary Education. This is his 9th year in the district and 8th year at San Marcos HS.

Coach Compton is entering his seventh year of coaching and teaching, bringing a wide range of experience across multiple sports. Over the years, he has coached football, girls’ basketball, hurdles, boys’ and girls’ soccer, and also served as an assistant wrestling coach, a true jack of all trades when it comes to athletics.

A 2018 graduate of Texas State University, Coach Compton earned his degree in Kinesiology with a minor in Special Education. His passion for coaching and teaching was shaped early on by mentors who inspired him to pursue this path —his middle school coach, Coach Jackson, who pushed him to go beyond what he thought possible, and his E4 teacher, Mr. Techmansky, who showed him the lasting impact of teaching.

Coach Compton is committed to building student-athletes who not only develop skills on the field, but also character, resilience, and confidence that will serve them for life. Just as importantly, he strives to support his students in the classroom, encouraging academic growth, discipline, and a mindset that prepares them for success beyond athletics.

Pearson was born and raised in Waco, Texas. A graduate of Waco High School Alumni Class of 2017, Texas A&M University Graduate Class of 2021 and Baylor University Master Graduate Class of 2023.

Pearson enjoys baking, watching football, floating the river and spending time with her dog, Uno. Pearson loves spending time with her parents, brother and friends when not working.

Coach Flores was born and raised in New Braunfels, TX. Flores graduated from Canyon High School in 2010 and from Texas State in 2014 with a Bachelor's degree in Exercise Sports Science. Flores is beginning his 8th year with SMCISD. He taught 4th grade for one year & PE for four years at Bowie Elementary. Coach Flores will be returning for his second year at SMHS to continue teaching P.E. and coaching boys basketball. All in all, he has coached youth boys basketball for 7 years at the high school, middle school and elementary level. When he is not coaching, you can find him working on old Chevys or spending quality time with his family by the river.

Hello, I am a graduate of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley with a BS in Rehabilitation Services. My passion for fitness started through high school sports and continued to be a part of my life through adulthood via recreational fitness, until I discovered CrossFit in 2016. CrossFit has offered the competitive atmosphere and community team environment I had been missing. Since then I have spent the last 3 years competing in team and individual CrossFit competitions. This is my second year teaching ACL- Life skills at San Marcos High School. As a strength and conditioning coach for tennis my goal is to ensure that our athletes are equipped with the skills necessary for achieving academic, athletic and social success.

Coach Hester was born and raised in Huntsville, TX. Hester is a recent LeTourneau University graduate. He earned a Bachelor's in Kinesiology while playing four years of collegiate basketball at LeTourneau University. He was a captain his senior season and coached by Coach Miller. Hester is looking forward to this first year of coaching and will also be pursuing his Master's at Texas State University.

Coach Martinez has been coaching high school tennis for 10 years with the last four at San Marcos High School. He played tennis at St. Marys University.

William McWhorter is the SMHS Golf Team's Assistant Coach. He has three years experiencing in coaching both the Girls and Boys teams, as well as the district's Middle School Golf Program. As an educator Coach McWhorter provides students with a rewarding understanding and appreciation of Social Studies and History course material. Mr. McWhorter holds at 7-12 Social Studies Texas Teacher Certification. He is a thoughtful, prepared, and thorough professional with a strong attention to detail and a capable educator and coach. Mr. McWhorter has five years teaching experience in Texas public schools and a teacher of record. He is currently in his first year teaching Early College High School U.S. History courses at SMHS for Coastal Bend College.

Coach Miller comes to San Marcos after spending seven seasons as the Head Basketball Coach at LeTourneau University. Miller guided the YellowJackets to five straight winning seasons, the school’s 1^st ASC Championship, 1^st NCAA Tournament (x2), and became the school’s all-time leader in wins. Prior to LeTourneau, he was the Head Basketball Coach at Katy Seven Lakes where his teams won four District Championships, seven straight playoff appearances with at least one win, and two regional appearances. Coach Miller is married to Monica, an English teacher and they have three kids, Kayla who graduated from UT-Dallas and lives in Dallas, Kyren who attends UT-Tyler, and Kayden who will attend Texas State University. When Miller isn’t coaching basketball he loves spending time with his family and rooting for the Green Bay Packers!

David-Ryan Sambrano was born and raised in San Marcos Texas. He was also a 2010 graduate of San Marcos HS. After high school, Coach Sambrano graduated from Texas State University, and in 2024 he completed his Master's Degree from Lamar University. This is his 7th year in the district and 10th year in education. His biggest fans are his amazing Wife Daniela, and his parents David and Angela Sambrano.

Coach Garvin Smith is a Health Science and Technology teacher here at San Marcos High School.  He joined the Health Science team, adding 27 years experience in Chiropractic and Acupuncture to an already outstanding staff and program at our school.

Coach Smith has come to the San Marcos Wrestling program, having 15 years coaching experience (involved in all levels of coaching grade school, junior high, high school, and post high school athletes). Coach Smith was recruited by and wrestled under Coach Dan Gable at the University of Iowa. He also brings a strong background in international style (Freestyle,& Greco-Roman) wrestling, Having won a total of 6 state titles, 2 national championships,and 5X All-American status. Coach Smith was 2X team captain for team Illinois and named AAU’s outstanding wrestler exiting high school.

Coach Smith is dedicated to improving on the already strong start of the San Marcos Wrestling Program. With plans to implement a sound feeder program from the younger kids  to insure the creation of a wrestling powerhouse for the state, right here at San Marcos High School.

This is Coach Stoney’s 35th year in education. His family includes his spouse Ronda and two children. He is very proud of his two grandchildren and loves spoiling them. He has coached everything from football, baseball, softball, basketball, golf, tennis, swimming, track and field.  He has experience at the middle school and high school levels, including head coaching and interim athletic director during football season. He is currently coaching tennis and loves being around our San Marcos student athletes.

Cathy Stoughton is in her 25th year of teaching and coaching, and her 21st year of teaching and coaching at San Marcos High School.  Coach Stoughton is a graduate of Texas Lutheran University with degrees in Mathematics and Kinesiology and a 1993 graduate of San Marcos High School where she played volleyball, basketball, and softball, and played the trumpet in the Rattler band, while being a member of the UIL Math team. 

While at SMHS, Coach Stoughton was an All-Central Texas softball player, and member of the Rattler 1992 State Champion and 1993 Region Semi-finalist basketball teams and the 1993 State Semi-Finalist softball team. In 1993, her San Marcos Big League team won the State Championship and finished two games away from the Big League World Series. She was also a member of the All-Region Band and advanced to UIL Math Regionals.

While at Texas Lutheran University, Coach Stoughton was a National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American and an NAIA All-American.  She was voted Regional player of the week six times and named to the Heart of Texas All-Conference team three times. In 1997, she was voted Heart of Texas Conference Most Valuable Player. 

In her SMHS coaching career, the Lady Rattlers have made fifteen playoff appearances, including capturing three District Championships, nine Bi-District Championships, two Area Championships, and one Region Finals appearance. Thirty-seven Rattler athletes have received college scholarships during her tenure. In 2014, Coach Stoughton was named Central Texas Coach of the Year by the Austin American Statesman and San Marcos Daily Record Coach of the Year. She was also selected to coach the Central Texas Senior All-Star game South team at Westlake High School in 2015. In 2021, Coach Stoughton was selected San Marcos High School Teacher of the Year. She currently teaches Geometry.

In her spare time, Coach Stoughton performs in the SMART Orchestra, and she recently completed her first triathlon. She is in her final year of study for her mathematics education masters at Texas State University. She and her husband have a 10-year daughter and 8-year old son, and she enjoys spending her time off with her family.

David is in his 13th year of teaching and 2nd year of coaching at SMHS. He is the PE teacher at Mendez Elementary School and has been coaching club soccer for 15 years.

Ryann is a special education teacher with a background in athletics as a former collegiate volleyball player at Texas State University. She is passionate about helping students and student-athletes develop self-discipline, resilience, and the life skills they need to excel both inside and outside the classroom. Her goal is to create an inclusive environment where every learner feels supported and encouraged to reach their full potential. Ryann is also working toward starting a career in coaching, where she can continue to inspire and mentor students through sports.

Jessica is proud to be a San Marcos High School and Texas State University alumna. She has been married to her husband, Brian, for 13 years, and together they have three amazing redheaded boys—Jacoby, Jett, and Jireh.

This is Jessica’s 10th year teaching and coaching, and each year reinforces why she loves what she does. She is passionate about building lifelong relationships with students and athletes. Her goal extends beyond helping them grow in the classroom or on the field or court; she is committed to supporting them in becoming better people. Jessica believes in the power of mentorship, hard work, and character, and she strives to model those values every day.

Swimming Head Coach

I began my career at San Marcos High School in 2015. Most of my life has been spent around the world of swimming. As a Rattler Coach, I believe in holding our athletes to the highest of standards and expectations in the pool, in the classroom, and in the eyes of the public. Swimming is a sport that not only fosters competitive spirit and builds every muscle in the body, but it also encourages life long self discipline. The San Marcos Rattler Swim Team is a family of high performing student athletes.

Boys Basketball Freshman Coach & Varsity Assistant Coach 

Joshua Waclawczyk was born and raised in Pleasanton, TX, graduating from Pleasanton High School in 2005. He enters the 2025–2026 school year beginning his third year of teaching and his second year as a coach. Before becoming a teacher, he spent four years in the United States Marine Corps, where he served the majority of his time with the 1st Marine Division before being honorably discharged as a Corporal in 2009.

After his service, he spent nine years in college earning his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Recreation from Texas State University. During that time, he began a career in sports media, covering a topic he had always been passionate about—sports. Through this work, he became ingrained in the Rattler community and soon found himself following in his family’s footsteps by becoming a teacher.

He is certified in Technology Applications EC–12 and enjoys creating graphics, having provided many game-day graphics for the Rattler Athletic Department. Through his continued involvement in sports and youth character development, he decided to take the next step in his journey and pursue something he had always been interested in: coaching.

Jordan Wallace, known by athletes and peers as Coach Dubb, began his football journey at a very young age. He continued playing through high school under the leadership of Coach Walsh. During that time, his team won back-to-back state championships in 2013 and 2014. Those experiences shaped his competitive spirit and instilled in him the importance of discipline and leadership, which continue to influence his philosophy today.

This is my 13th year at SMHS. Overall I have 21 years of experience (19 as head coach).  I have been married to wife Britney for 19 years and have 3 sons (Gunner, Kannon, and Kutter Gage) that all attend San Marcos schools.  Go Rattlers!

Alex is originally from San Antonio, Texas, and graduated from Judson High School in 2011. She relocated to San Marcos to attend Texas State University, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sports Science. She taught 7th grade science at Goodnight Middle School for two years, during which time she also started the cross-country program and coached basketball and track. She later transitioned to high school, wheres he co-teaches Chemistry and works in Special Education. In addition, she serves as an Assistant Volleyball Coach and as a Varsity Assistant and JV Coach in basketball.

Coach Michelle Washington has 21 years of coaching experience in Track and Field, Cross Country, and Volleyball.

Currently, this is Coach Washington’s 21st year as an educator and coach and her eight year at Miller Middle School, where she serves as the Girls Athletic Coordinator, 8A Volleyball, and Track and Field Sprints / Relays coach.  Coach Washington is also the Track & Field Director at San Marcos High School.

Coach Washington attended Nicholls State University, where she received a Division I athletic scholarship to run track and cross country.  Coach Washington is also a USATF Level 1 and Level 2 Certified Track and Field Coach.
