San Marcos CISD Weather Guidelines
The following guidelines should be observed for general outdoor activities during school hours including recess and PE. Campuses should use these guidelines to determine if outdoor play is appropriate. Weather factors such as precipitation and cloud cover should be considered when making the determination to allow outside activity.
Certain students and staff, due to existing medical conditions or risk factors, may need to take extra precautions. These conditions can include, but are not limited to asthma, cystic fibrosis, heart issues, immunosuppression, respiratory conditions, and skin conditions.
- Campus administration and/or district leadership may decide to limit or cancel outdoor play if weather conditions are deemed unsafe.
- Utilize the "Feels Like Temperature" to determine when it is too hot for students to be outside. The iOS and Android default weather apps are considered to be a reliable source for this. Cloud cover and precipitation can also be considered in making a decision to limit play.
- Limit outdoor play to 30 minutes for "feels like" temperatures between 90° - 99°
- Eliminate outdoor play/recess for "feels like" temperatures above 100°.
- Students are allowed unrestricted access to water.
- Provide students with an alternate activity if they are too hot.
- Use the charts below to help plan for safe outdoor activities. The Heat Index in the highlighted sections represents the “feels like” temperature. Students should be dressed appropriately for outdoor activities.
- Students who are outside for lunch transition or waiting for carpool are encouraged to stand in a shaded area to avoid sun exposure.
- Students who state they are too hot will be provided an alternate activity.
