Dear San Marcos CISD Families,
We want to inform you that Canvas, a learning platform used by schools across the country, recently experienced a cybersecurity incident affecting several users nationwide.
Canvas states:
While our investigation remains ongoing with the assistance of outside forensic experts, we want to share that your organization has been impacted by a criminal threat actor who has obtained data associated with your account. Based on what we have found to date, the data involved appears to include personal information. At this time, we have found no indication that passwords, dates of birth, government identifiers, or financial information were involved.
This serves as an important reminder to remain cautious when opening emails or clicking links online. Cybercriminals often use messages that appear legitimate to trick users into sharing private information.
Please take a moment to double-check links before clicking, verify the sender of unexpected emails, and avoid sharing passwords or personal information through unfamiliar websites. If you receive anything suspicious claiming to be from SMCISD or Canvas, please forward it to data_privacy@smcsid.net so our SMCISD Technology Department can review it.
Thank you for your support and cooperation. Thank you for your support and cooperation. San Marcos CISD Technology is committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment and will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
Dr. Michael Cardona
Superintendent of Schools
