Learning on the trails: Collaborative PE lesson at Spring Lake Reserve - Crockett Elementary
On December 5th, Crockett Elementary 5th graders participated in a collaborative lesson with PE teacher Coach Jones and all the 5th grade classroom teachers. Students explored 2.5 miles of green space at Spring Lake Preserve where they learned about aerobic exercise and self monitoring of heart rate. Students also incorporated topics being learned in their classrooms and how to relate them to real life experiences on the trail. Teachers led discussions on site and students made relatable observations to document in their science journals. Upon returning to campus, students took their experience and applied it to a math lesson by taking the distance hiked and learning how to convert that distance into different units of measure. The experience overall was a great success both academically and socially as students got to enjoy a piece of San Marcos’ natural areas that are second to none.
